How often and when should i water my lawn. i live in central nj

The lawn needs to get an inch to an inch and a half of water per week.  This needs to be applied in two deep waterings that are spaced a few days apart.  Watering deep an infrequent is best because it promotes deep root growth and also allows the grass to dry out in between waterings so you don't get fungus.  Also you need to water early in the morning, 4-5 am so you don't get fungus.  Grass that is consistantly wet at night will get a fungus.

You need to water early morning, don't do it at night as this promotes fungus because the grass will be damp all night. You don't want to water when it's windy and afternoon - too much evaporation and you'll just be wasting water. If you have a small lot you can water each area for about 1/2 hour.  Put down a tuna can and once you reach 1" of water, that is enough to sustain a healthy lawn.
