Question:

How often are ultra sound techs wrong about the gender?

I had an ultrasound done at 21 weeks. The tech looked from behind the baby for its gender and told us it was a boy. My motherly instincts tell me other wise so I was wondering if anyone knew how often the techs are wrong ....I've heard they can be from time to time.

  1. Maybe you're having a girl with a p***s - it happens, they're called transgendered individuals.

  2. If they're wrong, it's more common for them to be wrong about the baby being a girl than it being a boy. Mostly because they saw SOMETHING that tipped them off that it's a boy. If they tell you it's a girl, there's always that chance that they missed it. You could ask for another ultrasound a little later and they might be able to see better and ease your mind.

edit: I would be scared if they mistook the umbilical cord for a p***s. Lol. That would be one big wee wee.

  3. They're correct about 90% of the time.  The most common mistake is to be told your baby is a girl when it's really a boy.  Occasionally, a tech may think that because he/she doesn't see a p***s the baby must be a girl. Really, you have to see 'girl parts' to be sure the baby is a girl.  Sometimes, the baby just may not be in a good position for you to see his/her nether-regions, so the tech takes a best guess.  But - in that case the tech should tell you it's a best guess.

  4. My aunt was told she was going to have a girl and it came out a boy.  It happens but not that often.  If she saw a p***s and you saw the p***s.  Then it's probably a boy.

  5. not often but next time you go to have another doctor appt just asked them to look again. Thats what you pay them for.

  6. Actually, yeah. They can be wrong and at my next ultrasound, I am going to ask them to look at the gender again. They told me my baby was a girl and I'm no expert, but my myself and my fiance really thought we saw a p***s-just a little.."thing" sticking out. I keep having dreams that my baby is really a boy! I had one last night that I had another ultrasound and they said there's a 90% chance I'm having a boy. I would ask for another tech at my next ultrasound, to see what they think.

  7. I just had my 19 week ultrasound last week and it was obviously a boy. You can tell a big difference between the cord and the p***s. If you saw a p***s then your instincts are wrong. I would trust the tech more than instincts, they do this every day.

  8. I don't know a percentage but they can be wrong from time to time as you say.  If I were you, wait until baby is here to buy any gender specific things, or find a place to have one of the 3D or 4D ultrasounds done.

    Good luck!!!

  9. As you can imagine that depends on the age of the baby and of course whether they said they got a good look at it.

It can always be mistaken for the cord too....

I heard that after 5 months there aren't so many mistakes made. Our tech took a guess at about 16 weeks and was right.

Get another ultra sound in a couple of months... it will be sure then!!  Very Visible!

  10. I actually just heard from my aunt that one of her friends planned like crazy for a boy and designed the nursery entirely in blue and it turned out that the utrasound tech mistook the ambilical cord for a boy. Hope her new baby girl likes blue!

  11. My 1st we were told at 20 weeks a boy and I had no doubt in my pregnant mind they were wrong..we rescheduled a couple weeks later and sure enough GIRL. Found ot at 16 weeks with twins they were both boys and my last one a boy at almost 21weeks. There was no doubting any of them though.

  12. Usually when its a boy they can tell this right away if the p***s is sticking out....my first baby I was pregnant with a boy and they knew with in minutes, I am now pregnant with the second and it took them an hour before they could tell me it was a girl...

  13. On the ultra sound papers you can ask them to point out what make them think you have a boy. They also have a 3D one now that can show you just about eveything.
