Can somebody tell me why CF people (mostly men) are looked down upon by parents of future parents? CF people are referred as being homos, rapists, loners, etc. Why can't society respect CF people's decision?

From what I dealt with, is the reason why I hate people (parents/wannabes) who harass CF people.

  1. I don't feel as though I've faced any harassment or discrimination.

Maybe a bit of peer pressure, but not really any more than that.

  2. Try bringing a small child to a restaurant sometime and see who gets the dirty looks.

I don't look down on anyone for their child-rearing (or lack of children) choices.

  3. Since it'll be hard for me to Google "CF" and get a good answer, could you explain what exactly it means?

Edit: Child Free people are often looked down upon because they are viewed as making a decision they'll later regret.

I've had to deal with this in the past too. It might take you more searching to find a woman who doesn't want children, but they do exist. And the ones who share your view are obviously not intimidated by it.

2nd Edit: Take a wild guess what comes up when you actually DO google "CF" :P

  4. CF means cystic fibrosis.

  5. If anyone looks down on you for being child free, that's pretty stupid of them. I think they do that b/c it makes them feel better about themselves, they can point their finger and find "fault" with someone else. The thing they don't understand is that, first of all, it's none of their darn business if someone else chooses not to have kids, and secondly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with not having kids. It's much better to know what you want up front, rather than bring a kid into the world you don't want or are not prepared for.

  6. i have a child now but when i didn't my family( especially my mother) acted like there was something wrong with me because i was more interested in going to college instead of getting married and having kids(even though i was only 17). i sympathize with you. some people think your sole purpose in life is to see how many babies you can have. i still get criticized sometimes because i don't want anymore children.

  7. I think CF harassment/discrimination might lessen. It seems like I hear a lot of people offline talking about how overpopulated the world is becoming, or about couples who have tons and tons of children getting money from the state, etc.

  8. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal inherited disease in white persons. CF is an autosomal recessive disorder, and most carriers of the gene are asymptomatic. CF is a disease of exocrine gland function, involving multiple organ systems and chiefly resulting in chronic respiratory infections, pancreatic enzyme insufficiency, and associated complications in untreated patients. Pulmonary involvement occurs in 90% of patients surviving the neonatal period. End-stage lung disease is the principal cause of death.

CF is caused by defects in the gene for cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), which encodes for a protein that functions as a chloride channel and is regulated by cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Mutations in the gene for CFTR (CFTR) result in abnormalities of cAMP-regulated chloride transport across epithelial cells on mucosal surfaces. Defective CFTR results in decreased secretion of chloride and increased reabsorption of sodium and water across epithelial cells. Resultant reduced height of epithelial lining fluid and decreased hydration of mucus results in mucus that is stickier to bacteria, which results in infection and inflammation. These abnormalities result in viscid secretions in the respiratory tract, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, sweat glands, and other exocrine tissues. Increased viscosity of these secretions makes them difficult to clear.

No formal studies exist vis a vis the rates of discrimination against CF patients.
