My friend had a Toyota Camry and her engine locked. The crankcase was full of oil. The mechanic said that it was a faulty oil pump.

I'm a little afraid about this to my car... how often do oil pumps go out?

  1. My Accord went 300,000 miles on its original oil pump, and the car is still on the road. I wouldn't worry. Just dont EVER drive a car that has the "oil" light on. EVER! If the light even flickers on ONCE stop the car and have it inspected by someone who knows what they are doing.

  2. I've had too many cars to count over the years. I always by used cars so I'm at the mercy of how the previous owners took care of the car.

But I wouldn't think its too often. I have never had an oil pump go out. I drive my cars to about 200k miles

  3. Very rarely.

A loss of oil pressure is usually due to worn bearings.  if the engine is not properly maintained, (regular oil changes) then the oil pump pick up screen could become  restricted, causing the oil pump to run dry.

  4.    Not often. As  always keep it serviced like it should be and the odds are in your favor.

  5. They hardly ever go out. They might decrease in oil pressure buts that's normally it.
