  1. In Alberta, to get insurance, you need a vehicle inspection every year IF the car is over 10 years old.  Prior to that, an inspection is only necessary if requested by the insurance company.  And of course, anyone buying a used car should have it inspected.

  2. In New-Brunswick, cars need a valid inspection every year.

  3. In Nova Scotia, and in most provinces as far as I know, cars require an annual motor vehicle inspection to be considered roadworthy.

  4. In Ontario they are inspected when they change ownership and they must have an emissions test done every 2 years after the car is 5 years old.

  5. In Alberta, they are inspected when they change ownership (only if they are older than 10 years).

  6. In BC they are inspected annually if they are more than 5 years old but not in all areas of the province, and not all types of vehicles. The idea is that the principal purpose of the inspection is to make sure the emissions are what they should be, so the inspections are done only in heavily populated areas.
