  1. A crusty cere is one indicator, as is broodiness (taking up a corner of the cage-bottom as a nest, for example); excessive grouchiness is another, because just like with humans, female birds become more aggressive when they're hormonal. How often a female budgie comes into breeding condition depends largely on where the cage is located, and the owner's schedule; if the owner is an insomniac or works late, and they keep the light on for longer at night, the excess light tells the bird's biological clock that it is springtime and mating season. Whereas, if the bird is in a room that is not used as frequently (at least not at night), this doesn't happen; if they're in a dark room they will come into condition even less frequently because their internal clock tells them it's winter.

  2. Hi,

I think that budgies are ready to breed every 7 weeks, hens will get a very dark brown crusty cere, they will spend more time in the nest and will begin chewing everything in sight.

  3. Their noses turn very brown. And they start to act like girls do when they are PMSing. Well at least mine does...she's so silly. As to how often...she does at least 3 times a month, but she is one big cage with two boys, so I'm not sure if that's why it's so often. Good Luck.
