  1. It really depends on the brand and type.

Coil / Compact bulbs: Stay away from these, there are lots of reports of the UV range bordering UVC which is harmful to  living things (UVC is blocked by the ozone layer), avoid these as there is no reason to get one.

Tube lights: While most of these are rated in the 9-12 month range, they will start emitting less and less UVB around 6 months. Note, these lights will still emit visible light long after they have stopped emitting UVB

Mercury Vapor Bulbs: (my choice) These bulbs are often more expensive but last a lot longer. They average 12-18 months in lifespan. These bulbs emit heat as well, and the effective range of the UV output and range (distance to your scaly buddy) are much greater than any fluorescent tube out there.

I have a 3 year old Bearded dragon and I go with MVB, These lights are great as you get light, heat and UV all in one, though you do need to position them higher up to prevent over exposure to heat; usually better for a large tank or enclosure.

Some good info on amounts of UV and reasons to go MVB can be found here...

  2. Typically these bulbs should be replaced every year.

  3. MVB bulbs only need to be replaced every 9-12 months.  I'd suggest having an extra ready, though, just in case the one you have burns out.  Always good to be prepared.
