  1. > 1% on major airlines

  2. I have traveled 300,000+ miles on flights over 4 years (traveling several times a month) and have never had a problem.

  3. for me pretty close to 100%

  4. On American and European airlines almost never. Some of the African ones however, I'd be a bit nervous.

  5. In all the 15 mos. we accompany our wet lease B737-300, there was only 1 incident where we had an emergency landing,  after t/o a landing gear up line ruptured after retraction, so hydraulics drops to zero and we had to make the return flight, we had to declare an emergency.  So landing gear extension was by free fall. You think you can get the percentage?

  6. lol yooperpooper. Depends which airline. Some have some c**p engineering/maintenance and pilot training programs. For that reason I would never fly Air Pacific or Garuda.

  7. Your question has two prongs.  From the passenger viewpoint, it almost never happens.  From the pilot's view, every landing is a potential for disaster.  That's why he's prepared for every emergency and practices every possibility in the simulator.  The more he trains for the unexpected the better able he is to cope with it if/when it does happen and allow you to disembark without knowing there was any episode.

  8. a lot of emergency landiings are medical related, they dont necessarily have to be mechanical problems. I see more go arounds than emergency landings.
