Okay, I'm really scared of storms, and the severe thunderstorms always make me panic. I've had this fear since childhood and it stays with me. It's only gotten worse over the years and now I stay on weather.com almost 24/7 because of my fear. I'm terrified. They forecast a possibility of severe storms here in Georgia tomorrow. So I was wondering...how often do severe thunderstorms produce tornadoes? I'm hoping that as long as I love I'll never see one of those things...What do you think the risk is? Since 1950, my county has only had two tornadoes, the most recent was in 1992, so I always fear the risks, not to mention the fact that I live in a d**n trailer...

  1. Tornadoes occur when a colder air mass like a thunderstorm runs into a warmer air mass... or vice versa.

  2. storms that form in south carolina, georgia, and florida useually have a very good chance of forming a tornado. sorry. dont worry just stay calm.

  3. The chance of being hit by a tornado is slim. And in your case I wouldn't even worry if the last tornado was in 1992. That means that the slim chance of you being hit combined with the chance of a tornado being spawned is so small that I wouldn't worry at ALL! =)

  4. dude, i live in new jersey too and the odds of that happenening are so little that its dumb to even think about it!

  5. it depends what state u live in if u live in tucson no tornatos but kanses missurie and ohio has tornados ..

  6. I am very glad that you asked this question. In truth, severe thunderstorms spawn tornadoes only a minor portion of the time. The only statistic I know of is this: 7% of severe thunderstorms in Wisconsin produce a tornado. I doubt the percentage is much higher in Georgia. Severe thunderstorms are much more commonly known for producing high winds and hail.

For your own safety, I advise you to make some kind of survival plan for a tornado event. I don't need to tell you that trailers are terrible places to stay in during a tornado. If there is a sturdy building nearby, and there is a tornado watch or warning is issued for your area, then go there.
