  1. it depends (what type of board/ how hard the water its that hits it) but , it usally it doesnt break alot

  2. well... i ride mavericks on a daily basis.... and i've seen a few broken boards in my day....and broke a couple myself.... but it doesn't happen alot.

  3. It depends on two things.  How you ride. Where you ride.

  4. in my years of surfing, not often. But they will in the right conditions if your board gets nailed by the lip in the impact zone or something, it happens.

  5. well you'll get dings but thats minor if you break more than one board a year then you are pretty much a jackass and you should get better at surfing

  6. i went through eight surfboards this summer if that answers it.

  7. You're more likely to get dings on a board... they're like scratches and little cuts on your body... you never know where they came from, yet they're there.  Except they don't heal on their own.

But about a board breaking.  It doesn't take a huge wave to do it.  The board has to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Like directly in the impact zone on a shallow reef break.  Or landing wrong from an aerial.  Or pearling straight into a shallow bottom where the nose catches but the rest of the board keeps going.

The thickness of glass can affect the durability as well.  High-performance boards are getting thinner and lighter, which obviously leads to breaking easier.  But there are newer boards like the Carbon Fiber boards from Aviso/ Lost, and Firewire Parabolic Surfboards.  These are much stronger, but they're extremely expensive, starting at around $700.

  8. Boards typically break where you have powerful (not necessarily large) waves breaking in shallow water.  Or they get broken while trying to do aerials and landing on the board wrong.  So if you are an average surfer riding average waves you're probably not going to break one.
