My grandparents got two kittens over Christmas, their first cats. I was visiting my grandma Saturday.

First, I noticed platic picnic table clothes on the couches and chairs. Curious. She said that had been peeing on the furniture.

Then I got as far as the dining room and noticed THE SMELL! I asked her when was the last time she cleaned it and she said she scoops everyday. I probed further and found out that apparently no one told her that she has to eventually throw the litter out! She'd add to it when it got low, but it had never been replaced! She had been using that litter for 8 months!

I explained to her that even clumping litters don't get ALL OF THE URINE. Some stays and the box gets smelly. With 2 cats, I scoop evevyday and replace one a week. My Aunt stopped by while I was there and she said that she only throws out every 3-4wks! EWWWW.The smell would get to me long before then.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU CHANGE YOURS?

  1. Your suppose to scoop the litter box twice a day, if you have multiple cats that share a litter box, and your suppose to empty it out once a week.

I scoop once a day, because i only have one cat.

  2. About every 3-4 weeks....but I have an automatic litterbox that shifts through the clumped litter after every use. If it smelled bad, I would throw it out more often, but the automation does a good job. It uses the Tidy Cat with Arm and Hammer. I only have one cat too.

  3. 3 to 4 weeks?!?! EWWW!!!! omgomgomg!!!

I change mine twice a week but remove the turds as soon as they appear - RANK!!! I quite like the smell really. It's refreshing. Happy!!!!!

  4. I have a female kitten (4 months old) no other pets, and I scoop at least once a day and change her litter completely once a week.

  5. You are right. It is a good idea to scoop daily and throw out the litter each week. If your grandparents have two cats they might want to get another litter box because some cats prefer to have their own. If the cats are urinating in other places it could be because the box is dirty, they could be marking, or it could be a serious problem like a urinary infection. If it continues they should take the cats to the vet, at least to make sure there isn't some medical reason for them peeing on the furniture.

  6. For my normal cats, the above answer.

For my Persian, it is far more often.  Like many of these lovely "royal" cats, they won't use a box that has anything in it or seems dirty.  Some even require 1 box for #1 and another for #2!

I hope your grandparents have begun to do a bit more research so that they know all the things those kittens are going to need and save money to pay for them.  If they had just adopted a nice mature cat, they would have missed out on the many challenges yet to come for them.  I hope they are sound sleepers and their china is locked away.

  7. I change it once a week and clean it every day

  8. I have 2 litter boxes, actually using large plastic storage boxes and clean them twice a day.  Usually once a month, I take them outside emptying all the litter, scrape the bottom, and wash it.  Then I refill with litter.

  9. I have three cats, two different litter boxes and I change out the litter once a week. The night before the trash goes out lol.   3-4 weeks is waaaaaay too long. thats just nasty. and I can't even imagine 8 months... bleeeeeeh.
