How often do you need to change laptop batteries? ?

I was just wondering. I've had my laptop for two years and I do notice that the battery doesn't last as long as it use to, which make sense. Do I just need to wait till it stops working and stops charging? Or wait so many years? Just curious...

  1. I'd wait until the battery hold less than a 60% charge before replacing it. It depends on your usage patterns and if you find yourself self hunting for an outlet wherever you go. Keep in mind that whatever battery you buy make sure to do 3 complete charge/deplete cycles in the very beginning. Also, it's a good idea to at least use the battery until the laptop complains that it needs to be charged, at least once a month.

One more thing, do NOT buy generic or third-party batteries. Always buy officially licensed batteries for your laptop. Over the years I've learned that it's just not worth it to go generic on batteries because they're not tested as well as genuine brand batteries. Batteries are cheap ($50-$60) so it's not worth damaging your expensive laptop to save a few measly dollars.

  2. yep.. about 2-3 years. if it starts to get low quickly.. thats a sign. just go to dell.com or wherever your laptop is from and order one :) it'll start to last longer.

  3. When the battery doesn't hold more than 45 minutes charge . better start to shop around for a new batt.

  4. It varies, but if you get 3 years you've done well. The battery life starts dropping after about 2 years, sometimes sooner. If you have a corporate laptop you may get 5 years.
