wash your pet's food and water dishes? I wash mine twice a day after they all eat. With hot soapy water. My husband seems to think I am anal and have like OCD about it.

  1. Yeah

i don't wash them very ofetn

like once a week i just get some soap and rub and rinse with water...

  2. once a day. and none are even allowed to poke their noses in each others bowls. with the exception of the 3 akita/lab surrenders who eat out of a feeder.

and 2 x a week, the ones that can be, go through the dishwasher.

  3. I only wash them with soap and water like once a week.

Just kidding! I wash them once a day, but my dogs only eat once a day (although I've been considering changing it to twice a day). I have two big dogs and their bowls are not huge, so the water dishes get refilled constantly throughout the day...I just rinse and refill for the most part during the day...unless they go get all dirty then take a big drink and leave dirt all over the bowl...that tends to happen more often than not :D

    I'm sure you're not OCD...I'm guessing that's the norm!

Edit: Oh ick...maybe I was wrong and it's not the norm :D but definitely the right!

  4. my dog drinks from a bowl that cycles the water so usually once a week i take it apart and clean it.  with his food bowl i only wash it when i give him something other that his dry dog food, like when i mix rice with it.

  5. every time they get fed!

  6. For my dogs - I wash and scrub out their feeding dishes twice daily, after both meals. I put them in the dish washer one-two times weekly.

The water dishes are washed and refilled at least two-four times a day and put in the dish waster as often as possible.

For my cats - Their feeding bowls are never-ever-ever dirty, to be perfectly honest, but I scrub them out or throw them in the dish washer once a week.

  7. Your hubby may be on the right track... no, I wouldn't say that you're OCD, but you're getting a little carried away... just a tad.

You must remember that a dog (or any mammal, for that matter) will only build up an immunity to bacteria IF it has become exposed to it.  Excessively washing your dogs' dishes will increase the chance at your dog becoming ill from a bacteria.

Dogs also have an immune system that is unlike our own.   There are millions and millions of bacteria that they are exposed to day in and day out; they become immune.  We, on the other hand, clean and disinfect far too much making our own bodies susceptible to many, many diseases and viruses.

Ok, ok, babbling now :)  But in all seriousness, you're doing more harm than good by washing their bowls as often as you do.  If you want to have a read, here's a link for you that might help get you to understand what I mean.. and hoping that I don't come off as being cititcal, I honestly am not trying to be.

Just about forgot to answer your Q!!  I wash our bowls about twice a week as most of the dogs don't eat out of them anyhow.  They're meals are immediately taken out of their bowls by them and taken to an area where they'd rather relax and eat... or burried and eaten later.

  8. I wash them when they are done eating...also wash out their water bowls once a day

  9. I stick them in the dishwasher after every meal.

I don't eat off dirty dishes, so I wouldn't dream of making my dogs do it.

  10. well i havent washed my dogs at all. and there just fine. maybe u should just leave it alone. <3

  11. Hi I have a black lab golden retriever mix, and i clean her FOOD bowl about 1 time a week, but change the water everyday. It seems obvious to clean the water because why would you or your pet want to drink old nasty water. But please do clean the water bowl a couple times a month to prevent slimey junk and stuff. I would handwash the items because you don't want slime and leftover pet food going into a dishwasher.

  12. I am the gross one then, I wash then maybe twice a week, at least once a week,

I probably should wash them more

Water dish gets washed and cleaned daily
