  1. ive lived in sydney for 4 years and have never seen any venomous spiders or snake. you get the odd huntsman spiders which can get really big but arent dangerous. We also have a lizard living underneath our front steps its really cute but not dangerous in anyway. Australia has alot of dangerous creepy crawlies but these mainly live in the bush and if your living urban you wont come into contact with them, its  huge misconception about australia

  2. you will not see any deadly spiders and snakes in Sydney unless you go looking for them & then probly have no luck

  3. The funnel-web is the only really deadly spider in Australia.  Redback bites can be fatal, but the venom acts so slowly that there should easily be enough time to get to a hospital where they'll have an antivenom.  No one's been killed by one in more than fifty years.  Funnel-webs are pretty easy to avoid.  Be careful if you're moving things around in a shed, particularly in hot weather.  Don't walk around outside at night without shoes.  And if you see one in a swimming pool (they tend to look for water, you see) don't assume it's dead.  They can survive underwater for days.

There are a few species of venomous snakes, but they all tend to avoid settled areas.  I can only recall seeing one red-bellied black snake and maybe three brown snakes, all of them in country areas on hot, dry days.

  4. The Spiders are large in OZ,

The ones that you may see in your house, are 4 times has big has the ones you see in England

  5. Dont worry about the spiders and snakes.  There are simple and easy precautions to avoid getting bitten.  Dont put your feet into shoes without first banging them on the ground, dont pick up something in your back yard without turning it over with a stick.  But the best think you can do is once you move somewhere talk to the local council they will help you and your children familiarise yourself with any dangerous animals/creatures in  your local area.  Have a great time.

  6. two very different cities. neither are less or more dangerous when it comes to venomous spiders or snakes. the chances of seeing or being bitten by either is like winning lotto. the bush areas surrounding each state,on a hot summers day you might see a snake, but still very rare. our Aussie kids survive and most reach late adulthood without ever seeing a snake ,unless in the zoo. spiders are usually found in their unique habitats . when you know what they are you can easily avoid them. don't stress your kids will be fine. they will have more challenges with traffic than anything else

  7. If I wanted to walk out in my yard in search of a deadly spider, I would find one within 2 min, but I know where to look.

I live beside them 24/7 never been bitten, but I am aware.  If I wanted to see a snake, I would not find one, but I don't know where to look, if I knew where to look I am sure I would find one.  I see snakes on the road but I have never had only had one cross my path a few times.  I have seen quite a few dead ones.

  8. I live in Perth so cant help you so much with sydney, though im sure it isnt much different to here. The only time you'll find spiders to worry about here is red back spiders which hide in dark and damp places, so unless you go digging around in an abandoned part of a tool shed i wouldnt be worried, a little bit of fly spray will kill them - ive lived here my whole life, and probably have seen about 2. snakes are nothing to worry about in the city and in the bush they arent too common as they get scared away by the noise we make. the only things youll see here may be big looking but are harmless.

Australia isnt as scary as we make it out to be. watch out for those drop bears though ;-)

  9. I hate spiders, even the British ones, but I lived in Sydney for 10 years and had ZERO problems with them.

I now live in QLD, but have got used to seeing the spiders in the garden, and as long as I don't go near them I am OK.

I still hate them, but I can live in this country quite easily. From my experience the kids will have no problems with them.

The following quote may also re-assure you: "There have been no deaths in Australia from a confirmed spider bite since 1979"

I think I have seen only one snake here in 16 years.

  10. Snakes you would hardly ever see and if you did chances are you would be living near bushland. As for spider just dont go looking for them and they wont find you.

  11. I've been to Sydney twice as part and parcel of my holidays in Australia and can honestly say I never saw one spider and the only snakes I saw were in zoos, Australia is fantastic don't let other peoples fear of spiders and snakes put you off.

  12. You're probably more likely to see spiders in Adelaide then you are in Sydney. In a common household, you might find one or two spiders inside the house a month at most. They're all harmless spiders though, they mostly live in the garden but they can't bit you or sting you. Its more the shock then anything.

You will only find deadly snakes or spiders in the bush.

Perhaps you should come over for a holiday and find where you would like to live. Adelaide is a slower quieter city, some say boring. Sydney is the opposite.

And unless you keep your shoes in the garden or under the house you do not have to shake them out before wearing.

  13. Hardly ever.. I havnt seen any dangerous spiders and animals around for a long time..

Since its a busy area, with alot of houses and what not.. there wont be as many as in the bush..

Dangerous spiders and snakes are the least of your worries in Sydney..

You wont see a snake in sydney... Spiders usually hide.. They wont bother you or your kids anyway.. Unless you plan to live in a tree? haha sorry. bad joke.

  14. I am sure that your kids will not harm any spiders or snakes.

  15. I'm a Sydneysider lived hear all my life, I have never come across a deadly spider or snake. In our house we have daddy long leg spiders they get up in the corners of the ceilings, spin their webs catch flies and eat them they are harmless as long as you're not a fly. We wipe them down with the feather duster then give the duster a shake outside.

  16. In general suburbs urban areas snakes turn up very rarely. Now spiders are a lot more common an we have 2 that are considered dangerous the red back spider and the funnel webb spider.Snakes in Australia are generally venomous such as the brown snake, red bellied black snake, taipen, tiger snake, death adder.Having said that there are rare cases these days when people get bitten by one of these creatures. This is because they tend to get away from people rather than attack. With spiders it is important to learn not to touch them.Teach your children early not to pick up or try to poke snakes with stick if they see them.

Also,it is important for you to learn how to treat a snake bite and spider bite.Other nasties that you might come across are blue bottle jelly fish on our beaches. Now,these are not dangerous but can cause a lot of pain.Stone fish is also a nasty little thing. There is also blue ringed octopus. However, these cases are really rare.I have been here for 15 years and heard of one instance where someone died snake bite. That was only because the person that was bitten did not get medical help.So the chances of encountering these things are slim if you are in the city.More likely if you live in the bush.

  17. Only last week shot a brown snake that was on the patio(near downtown Sydney).  It is very poisonous.  Funnelwebbers are quite common in my garden.(not to successful at doing the garden thing)

  18. I've lived in Sydney all my life and never seen a Snake here. I nearly stepped on a brown snake, just outside Brisbane and I've seen a few around Lismore. but never ever in Sydney.

As for spiders... well they're everywhere in Sydney. Apparently funnel webs are supposed to be common and you're warned against them from birth, but I've never seen one. Red Backs are pretty easy to find though. They're the main deadly spiders you'll find here. There's daddy long legs everywhere but they can't hurt you. And Huntsmen scare the bejesus out of everyone because they're so huge. But they're harmelss as well, I've had enough of them on me to contest for that.

As for other area's of Australia I don't know. It really depends how rural you go, especially with snakes. If you live in any major city in australia you probably won't be bothered by snakes. And I've lived with spiders my entire life and only heard of a couple of people being bitten. For them to bite you you've got to actively provoke them, and I sincerely hope you're not that stupid
