How often do you sing to your children?

I sang to my son most nights before he went to bed because he requested it. He loved hearing us sing 'our songs' and I also sang to him when he was scared. Especially when he was in hospital, I sang to him a lot then.

I now sing the same songs to my twins as well.

How often do you sing to your children and are there certain songs which mean something to you and your children?

  1. I don't usually sing, but my husband does. And it's always the same song. He has sang it since our first child was born. The song has become very meaningful, and my kids request it every night. It's "Cats In the Cradle." And it has nothing to do with cats...lol...

Those are the lyrics, and it's about a father and a son, but Matt (hubby) replaces the parts about the son with "daughter," when he's singing to the girls, and keeps it as son when he's, well, singing to his son. =)

  2. Not only is there never a day without singing around here, but there's rarely an hour without it.  I should put my diaper change and "get out of the bathtub" songs on Youtube.  Maybe I could make an album.

The diaper song (loses something without the tune):  "'Cause you need a brand new diaper for the day.  Right away! For the day.  'Cause it's nice to have a diaper when you start out a new day.  Right away! Every day.  'Cause you need a brand new diaper every day."  My son sings along.

On the negative side, when I'm in the middle of singing to my older kids, they've been known to interrupt and ask if we could listen to "music."

  3. we sing all the time. In the car, walking around. They can be made up songs or off the radio. We can't sing but love to try lol

  4. I sing whenever the opportunity comes up...like every time I hear a song!!!! I got that from my mother....

  5. I sind eveyday to my two little people, although I've a terrible voice and it might be a form of child abuse.

I tend to sing mostly traditional songs and a few of the newer action songs we sing at playgroup.

My husbands great grandparents were Lithuanian and I sing a song that has been handed down from them.  Although   it has been a case of chinese whispers for several generations and probably doesn't translate into anything now!

  6. I sing to my daughter every day.  Morning and nights.

    she loves it.

  7. Everyday!  especially if she won't settle at night, for some reason she falls asleep well to christmas carols - no matter what the time of year!

  8. I rarely sing to my son. I have a horrible voice and it hurts my throat.  but when i do its "wild world" by Cat stevens

  9. i was instructed not to because i would make them tone deaf.   I have the worst singing voice ever and i can't  keep a beat.  I was told i would throw them off.  We play lots of music

  10. I've unfortunately been blessed with ability to remember lyrics to just about every song I hear, and yet I can't hold a note to save my life!  Sooooo, my kids normally tell me to "Stop Singing Mummy!!!!", they're 2 and 4.  Funnily enough though sometimes singing Stairway to Heaven will settle them down if they're in bed.  They also love boppy 60s songs like "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" "My Boyfriends Back" "Runaway" and we sing them together.

  11. I DON'T HAVE CHILDREN!

    JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. I sing mickey mouse clubhouse songs to my 3 yr old daughter.  not to mention those d**n little mermaid songs.  Beauty and the Beast, Wizard of Oz, and so forth.  Especially that Hot Dog song on mickey mouse.  She loves it and my friends can pick on me all they want.  my little angel is way more important than those jerks

  13. As babies they loved it. I  wish I did more of it.  Now they're 6, 9, 18 and 21 and beg me to stop.  "Maaaaa.  Someone might hear you."  (The 6 year old lets me.)

We sang a lot of the typical childhood songs together, but mostly we loved singing Disney songs from the Lion King, Little Mermaid, etc.  Again, back when I was allowed to sing.

My kids love songs like the National Anthem, My Country Tis of thee, etc, and so do I.  When I feel like singing, and start singing one of these songs, I can usually get away with it and even get them to join me.  Ever belt out America the Beautiful and not care how you sound?  It's exhilirating.

  14. My son and i always sing in the car and before bed, We usually sing 'You are my sunshine', which he loves me singing to him, otherwise we just sing general nursery rhymes.

  15. I sing ALL the time!  Sometimes just pottering around the house singing to myself! hahaha  We all sing in the car (very amusing for people sitting next to us at the lights! LOL), and my girls and I sing to my 7 month old all the time too.

When my daughter was a baby I made up a medley of songs for her that I called my sunshine medley

    You are my sunshine

My girl (I've got sunshine on a cloudy day)

You are the sunshine of my life

    A little ray of sunshine

She loved it!!  She's 9 and still wants me to sing them to her.  I also sang "have I told you lately that I love you" and "you are so beautiful to me" to her and now sing it to my little boy.

Then I've got their special songs that I've put on a mixed CD - my daughter's is "Brown eyed Girl" and my son's is "I'm in heaven when you smile"  (haha, can you tell I like Van Morrison? LOL).

When my step daughter became part of our family I picked out "Sweet Child of Mine" because she loves guitars! hehehe... Plus, her mum hasn't been in her life since she was about 3 and I wanted her to feel like part of the family. It made her feel very special and whenever the song comes on she shouts "That's MY song!" hehehe

I think singing to your kids is terrific and it makes them feel special when they have "their own songs".  Music has always been a big part of my life, and it brings such joy into a family to be able to share it together :)

  16. I sing to both of my boys before bed, they both have their own "special song," one likes to hear "Jesus Loves Me," and the other is too little to have a preference but I sing "Light of My Life" to him before bed.  It is part of our bedtime routine.  I also make up songs all day long about what we are doing, what good boys they are, silly and nonsense stuff, which of course, they love.
