How often do you water your corn plants?

Just wondering. How often are you watering? Do you fertilize? Add compost? How is your corn doing? Have you harvested any yet? How is your corn progressing? We planted ours late so it's only 3 feet tall but it looks healthy. Please, mention what part of the country you're in.

I am in Northern California.

We don't need to water!  I think some parts of the state wish we NEEDED to water the corn.  We've had the largest rainfall documented for a very long time.

  2. Hi i am in area code 95695 of California, i believe it is the mid-west part of it...anyways i planted my corn about in late april and it is about 5 feet tall, with some of the female pollen hairs coming out now. the wind kind of messed some of them up by practically twisting and bending the top half off a few, so i just snapped that off and hand pollinated the females with some pollen from other corn. Here are a few tips on planting and raising corn you may find useful:

*Fertilize every 1-2 weeks, corn is somewhat simple to grow if you do it right, and corn needs lots of food, as well as:

*Water-every 2-6 days, depending on how often you are out there and how loose/hard your soil is

*Sun-plant in an area where your corn gets lots of sun

*Pollination: in order to receive good harvest, it is important to select a large area to plant many corn plants so that your female flowers get plenty of even fertilization, since corn is in fact a wind pollinated plant. I, as well as many other expert gardeners would suggest a minimum of 8ft.X8ft.  square, with spacing about 1 feet between each plant (64 plants). if you do not do this you may end up with corn cobs that have some kernels that are large, and some that aren't even grown!

Hope i helped and have fun!

P.S. i have heard that once your corn is bigger, you should not pull weeds around it as it may damage the corn's roots. I might recommend using a hoe instead of uprooting weeds.

I make sure plants get at least an inch of water a week, but never water from above - it can wash away pollen. And I Feed plants with a balanced liquid organic fertilizer three times: when they reach 10 inches, then 18 inches, and when tassels appear.

  4. In northern california you should water the corn when they are dry you cant water them too much late crop at 3 feet is great :) you will be sucessful.you can put hay (straw) between the rows, this slows the weeds and keeps them wet longer.
