Question:

How often do you worm your horse?

Usually, I just pay the lady who we board my horse at the money that it takes to worm my horse. However, I am moving her to my house so I need to find out how often I should de-worm her, what types of de-womer I should use, and how much they cost.

  1. it sayds on the box  i cant think of what i use

  2. Horses should be wormed every 2-3 months. Wormers should be switched every time you worm (for example, you use ivercare one time then use zimectrin the next) because different brands have different ratios of wormer in them. Ask your vet first, though.

  3. a lot depends on where you live.  In my area, it never gets cold so we have growth year round.  We worm every six weeks and rotate the wormers between ivermectin and tapecare (which is like a double strongid).  shop around.  you can get good deals but check the expiration dates.  worming is not expensive $3 to $10.

  4. worm every 3 months and rotate brands...oops and paste wormer you can get at your local feed or tack store...10-15 dollars a tube....really not bad...good luck

  5. Quarterly or every 3 months , however, I would recommend a slow rotation.. i.e. use an Ivermectin derivative over a year and then switch the next year as so far there hasn't been any resistance developed to Ivermectin.  Or the best answer is consult your local equine vet and get on their herd health program.

  6. It depends on the wormer.  Some wormers go in the horse's feed every day, others you give to the horse every few months.  Check on the package.

It is also important to switch wormers a couple times a year.  That way you kill parasites which might be resistant to a certain type of wormer.

  7. here in florida is good to use the feed with the wormer in it , it's a daily dose & will insure no paracites. check your feed store for price,if not you should do a paste monthly

  8. Minimum, you should worm twice a year (Spring and Fall when you do your shots). I worm every 3 months usually. Right now, I am fighting a tapeworm problem with my horse so was are trying tube worming 2x per week and then he is going on the daily Strongid. It will depend though on how much you horse travels. If you don't travel at all, 2x per year is ok. If you travel often, go for the daily. Remember, even with the Strongid, you will still want to past worm every Spring and Fall with Ivermectin and something that kills tapeworms. Trust me, you don't want to get into the tapeworm problem. It is a very frustrating thing. The paste wormers run anywhere from $5.00 - $15 ish. Strongid is about $35 a tub.

  9. well most Warmers tell you how long they last but remember to change it every two times. also worm the horse when you first it home just to make sure the horse is clean.

  10. i worm once a month

and i switch off and on ivermecton, zimmermectin, something else that starts with an M i can't recall the name matrimection? lol sorry i forgot!!

and i switch because parasites can get used to one wormer and then the wormer will becom inefective

so make sure you rotatebrands and different worm pastes!

they cost from 4$ to 15$

i always buy the 8$-9$ dollar ones and occasionally the 15$ one just for precaution =)

  11. I paste my horses every 2 months and i use 2-way rotational worming and it's about $15.00 per tube.

  12. Paste worm every three months.  Tube worm once a year....

  13. How long depends on the deowormer. They are either

    4-6 weeks

    6-8 weeks

    or

    10-12 weeks

It says how long on the box.

Do a fecal analysis test to determine what your horse needs.

There is one that kills ALL worms and is highly recommended by a good vet in my area but I dont remember the name. It was something Gold. Cost depends on the dewormer

  14. About every 3 months.

  15. I worm my horse every three months, and I alternate the brands and strengths of wormer that I use. Wormer can cost from about 4.00 up to 15.00 depending on their strengths.

  16. Worm every three months at a minimum. If your horse is around other horses or is placed in stall used at times by other horses (such as at a show) I suggest worming monthly. Paste wormers of today are great. We use to have to tube worm them which is a little more trouble but now you just need to paste worm but I would rotate wormers from time to time. Worming a horse is VERY important and easy to do. I'm glad you are TAKING THE TIME TO PROPERLY CARE FOR YOUR ANIMAL.  Your horse will appreciate you. 17. I worm my horse once every year. When the vet comes he gives her all the shots she needs.

  18. Resistance to all 4 deworming products, including ivermectin,  has been recently conclusively established and you should discuss this with your vet...it changes the way we should be deworming our horses.  All veterinarians are aware of this information and can advise you of the best course to follow for your horses in your situation.
