  1. ANY dog can have issues during her first - and second or third- whelp.

    You should always get her proper prenatal exams and have the vet on call when the time comes - as well as enough resources to pay for an emergency C-section.


  2. German Shepherds generally birth very easily. They are one of the least likely breeds to have a difficult whelp. If the father was a different breed and was say a mastiff or much larger dog than the mom- then  you could anticipate a problem. But if dad was another shepherd or similar size dog then things should go smoothly. Try to relax because your dog will most likely be just fine.  

  3. There is no definite answer, it varies from dog to dog.  To be on the safe side, you should prepare for any and all problems that could arise.   If the b_ch is younger than 2, she may be mentally immature to deal with whelping, and could physically have problems as well.
