Everytime.  It takes a second and could prevent your house from burning down.  It makes the dryer more efficient too.

I think you're talking about the lint trap?  If so, I clean mine after every load.  It doesn't always need it, but I check it.  It will make your clothes dry faster and save on your energy bill.

The lint trap screen should be cleaned off after every load of clothes. With towels you may need to clean it twice.

You should clean the trap space itself with an appliance brush and/or vacuum it out as needed. It will depend on how much laundry you do. Same with the vent. It can build up with lint and cause a fire hazard particularly anywhere the vent pipe bends. Once every few months in usually fine and enough to ensure your dryer lasts longer and runs efficiently.
