How often should I fertalize my grass, and how many times? and what times?

  1. It depends on your basic philosophy of grass growing and how often you want to mow.  Many fertilizer manufacturers now have "systems" set up where you buy specialized fertilizer spring/summer/fall (and sometime winter) to fertilize the lawn and address other issues. For example Scott's now is a weed/feed fertilizer, in fall/winter depending on your climate it has a moss controller added.

    I have a neighbor who fertilzes once a month spring-fall and probably mows twice a week.

    Personally,  I have don't like all the mowing so I fertilize early spring and let the lawn go dormant during July/August/Sept using minimal water - then do moss control.

    Usually fertilizing once or twice a year is enough, once in the spring and once mid/late fall. Depending on the soil, adding lime, etc in the spring may be more beneficial than fertilizer.
