Only females bite, the digestion of blood is required for them to produce a batch of eggs.

It is a bit like filling the petrol tank in a car. If they manage to fill up at the first attempt then they will go somewhere quiet, digest the blood and won't bite again until they have laid their eggs. If they don't get enough at the first attempt, they will keep going until they have enough.
