  1. That really depends on the teachers and staff.  Everyday there shoud be new concepts and use of new materials... however, the overall environment...should not be altered drastically too much on a day-to-day basis.  Small children need to feel a routine and consistency to a very large degree.  The main thing - is to give lots of choices and rotate them within the room to allow all the children access to the entire room.

  2. our basic layout is kept the same all the time.. we rotate our home corner every month.. displays are also changed monthly (adding art work all the way through) we rotate toys every week... making sure that every hour the activities are changed..

  3. as already mentioned it depends on the centres policy's, philosophy, resources and staff.  Most centres generally change their centres to follow the children's interest.  If the centre has a emergent curriculum philosophy then the centres changes as the children change it.  The best centres are adapted and changed by the children them selves to allow for creative thinking and freedom of change.

  4. We change our room every month to go with the new theme.  We add art work almost daily.

  5. This depends on the preschool. The basic environment should stay the same for the full year or at least long stretches of time so as not to confuse or overstimulate the children. However the decorations and themes of the room I believe should change monthly to keep the kids engaged without overloading them. Also certain centers can be added and taken away daily or weekly to keep the toys fresh.

  6. Depends on setting ,staff, childrens needs/interests etc.

We normally have a change around termly and have a huge clean and figure out which areas need to be changed (eg role play, layout of messy area etc). We change displays regularly with kids work, and we have differnet toys every day.

During session we change toys if chidlren are getting a bit bored or too boisterous.

However we've had austistic children and blind children (no not Visually impaired-BLIND) and so you have to be careful changing environment as it can cause huge problems :)

  7. every week the preschool are working on a stepping stone curriculum which involved things such as personal, social, and emotional and there are activities to these which will be planned by the preschool so these could be an activities on separate from main carer and we could talk about who brings us into preschool, who will pick us up from preschool if you are not involved in a preschool it is very difficult to explain there is so much about the environment in the preschool setting why don't you go into preschool and ask them they be pleased to help you.  You will be surprise in what they do.

  8. I am assuming you mean the physical environment, the classroom.  Once you set up your basic room arrangement, you don't want to stray from that too much.  Only make changes when necessary, like if the kids have made a running path or your art area is too far away from the sink.  You want to have a combination of basic materials/toys and theme-related materials/toys.  Try not to change the basic materials too often, perhaps rotating them every few months or adding something new should be enough.  But change out your theme-related materials/toys according to what you are talking about.  Example, say you have a block center, so your basic materials are a wooden block set, a foam block set, and a plastic block set.  Rotate through some other types of blocks like legos, cardboard bricks, or replace a one-color wood set with a multi-color wood set.  Then depending on the theme, rotate out things like cars, road signs, animals, other "construction" materials, like say you're doing a farm theme, add something that could be used to build a stable or add one of those play farmhouses.  Add a box of colorful pieces of material - these can be used to make things like tents.  You see what I'm talking about?  Consider using centers in different ways - you dramatic play center is typically a kitchen type of set up, but with a few modifications, can you change it into a post office or a beauty salon?  Take materials for one center and use them in another, or could something be created in one center to be used in another - like going to art center and making a "backdrop" that can be used in blocks, manipulatives, or dramatic play.

If you are talking about how often you change activities, this depends on the age you are working with.  You want to vary quiet and loud activities, inside and outside, free-time and structured time.  Look for sample daily schedules online for the age group you work with.

  9. I agree with the majority who say keep the basic setup

    and materials the same

Add new materials to fit your themes.

    Remember sometimes less is more

The best cue for what to add or change comes from watching the kids play and knowing their interests
