How often should I be fertilizing my potted tomatoe plants .?

I live in the midwest and have a very large potted tomatoe plants.

They are not ripening yet but I would like to have them continue to produce tomatoes even afte the weather gets cold I will try to bring the pot indoors

  1. The best way to fertilize is once when you pot them.But if you haven't done that,then add a Tablespoon of fertlizer to each plant.You can also add a Tablespoon of Milk Powder which reddens up the tomatoes.Fertilizer doesn't produce just tomatoes.It also promotes leaf.So if you over fert it you'll just get lots of leaves.Yes you can bring the pot inside,but the best way is to leave the pot outside and cover plant with white plastic sheeting.This protects againt weather,but allows the sun and moisture in.


  2. use a fertilizer that can be mixed with the water, every time you water them at half strength.  Ideally it will be 15-30-15 ratio, but I love to use fish emulsion even though it is less than the ideal ratio.  You just have to compensate by crushing egg shells to a fine dust and mixing in the soil when you pot them up.

    Also, what has worked for me here is to pull plants out of the ground (roots and all) before the first frost is a threat, and hang them upside down in the shed.   The tomatos continue to ripen on the vine that way.
