  1. If it is new you should do it the frist time in less than 1000 miles and then follow the owner manual. The dealership did mine and adjusted the valves and a few other things. In other words they checked it out like it was a new machine and serviced it. I think the next one is around 3k? Just take care of it.

  2. I like to change the oil (AND filter) every 3k, no less than every 5k.

But, read about oil for yerself....

Look near the bottom where there's a chart labled "Relative Viscosity Retention"

    Read about oils at

    http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/

    --look under "Engine Oils"

And see what Dr. Piston has to say

    http://www.drpiston.com/

--look under "Short Takes" , item 13.

  3. I do mine once a year as part of the beginning of a new season...

plus it gives me an excuse to get it out in february or march when i can't ride it, at least i can work on it...

  4. check your owners manual and go with that.  and if you change it once a year, i hear its best to do it at the end of the season.  i guess the c**p in your oil can cause some corrosion over time after its settled that long.

  5. The safe answer is 3,000 miles, but you could get away with 5,000 since you've got a v-twin and not a high-revving inline 4 like sportbike (15k redline).
