Question:

How often should I clean my litterbox for my (1) cat?

I usually do it twice a day, though lately I've been slacking off to once a day. I was surprised when my cousin told me she only scoops once a week for her cat.

My cat has kidney disease so he drinks a lot of water and pees a lot, but if he didn't I'd still do it at least once a day. I'm still surprised about the "once a week" thing; I'm surprised the cat can even navigate in there.

  1. wen u say "clean" do u mean empty it out and refill it with new litter???.i scoop it wen she poops(smells too bad to leave it) and clean it all out every week.

  2. u should clean it up as soon as your cat uses the litter tray and wash

the tray at least once a week just so everything does not start to smell

also we have some plastic sheet under the box sometimes the cat is

in the box but pees over the side

  3. I clean the p**p out the sandbox daily for my cat.  The actual litterbox I clean and wash and replace with new litter about every one and a half weeks. My cat uses the crystal litter, which I find absorbs the pee better and doesnt leave that damp smell and wetness at the bottom of the tray. I also place the sandbox on a special plastic mat so if for some reason he misses the litterbox, the plastic mat is easy to remove and clean.  Well done for being such a responsible pet owner. Your friend sounds a bit slack and it is very unhealthy for her to keep her cats p**p in there for a long period of time as it can become very toxic.  How can she cope with the smell as well? and how does her poor kitty find space to do his new p**p everyday?

  4. eeewwe  i bet her house smells lovely.

i do it once a day, my mom is right behind her two cats, and if she misses it, they will sit there and meow until she scoops it.

  5. It depends on the type of litter you are using.  If you are using 'old fashioned' clay litter, you really have to clean it at least daily, and replace fully once a week.  If you are using something better like fresh step clumping you can stretch the cleaning a little longer, and only have to replace the whole pan around once every 2 weeks to a month.

The cat I just got, Onyx, was using clay litter before, and when I was buying stuff for him at the store, I picked up the fresh step and he really loves the finer texture much better, and it doesn't smell bad at all (at least after he buries it.)  When I am cleaning the tray, it actually smells nice.

  6. We do ours daily sounds like your friend is on the lazy side I feel bad for the cat. Why do people even get pets if they aren't going to take proper care??  Good for you your cat has a special family.
