How often should I get an ultrasound?

I'm 16 weeks 5 days. I switched doctors due to moving. The first doc did a pelvic on my first visit at 5 1/2 weeks and an ultrasound on my second visit at 8 1/2 weeks. My current doc only asked about a pelvic and I told him the other doc did one and he requested the exam. He did an ultrasound on my first visit with him at 11 1/2 weeks, but none on my 2nd visit at 15 1/2 weeks. How often do they do one? I just worry that the baby is alright?

  1. to my knowledge ma mom had one every 4 wks wen she went to the doc..wen i start doing ma visits i hope its every 4 wks too

  2. Wow, your lucky, I am 28 weeks and have only had 1 u/s.

Most doctors only 1-2 ultrasounds, if your lucky you get 3.

You probably won't have another ultrasound until your 20 weeks, and then you might have 1 more after that.

  3. It depends on your location, or doctor etc

But on average, healthy pregnancies only need about 2 ultrasounds, maybe a 3rd in the final trimester to see how big the baby is.

Usually, there is one to diagnose a healthy pregnancy (intrauterine) , in the first trimester, and then there is the big 20 week one.

  4. Canada, you get 1 at 18 weeks unless another is warranted (and if you know your dates.)

  5. if you don't feel your baby moving then you should be concerned. I requested ultrasounds because I did not feel my baby moving. She was fine, while the doc was doing the ultrasound she showed me that my baby was moving her lips and moving a little. She was and is such a calm girl and that may be the reason I would hardly feel her moving. However, if it is bothering you so much you should request one.

  6. They won't do them every visit. But you can always ask for one if you have concerns for your baby. You usually get one right in the beginning to determine how far along you are. And another one at around 5 months. Then they may do another one before birth. Don't be afraid to ask for one.

  7. I am having twins, so I have had several ultrasounds.  I am now getting one once a week.  It's pretty cool.  But yes, I have heard when you are pregnant with a single baby that you only get one, maybe two.

  8. U/S are not routine. You should have another around 20 wks...give or take a couple. The docs do a pelvic exam to feel the circumference of the pelvic inlet & outlet and ischial spines to determine if your pelvis will accommodate an average size baby.

  9. you usually only get 1 in the first, 1 in the 2nd and 1 in the 3rd trimesters. 3 at the most unless there are problems.
