Question:

How often should I replace fish tank filter?

I am talking about the actualy filter not the catridges (sp)

I just put a new carbon in and the water does not come out that well, I have had the filter for about a year. It was a filter I got in an aquarium kit, so I don't know how good they are.

If I replace my filter are there any risks my fish will die from the loss of bacteria?

  1. Most of my filters are going on the 9 year mark for me.  Usually the ones that come in those tank set up kits are kinda sucky.  But, I do have one or two of those as well.

Unplug it, put the filter media in a bucket with some water to keep it wet, and try cleaning out the impeller area.  This is usually good to do once or twice a year to keep it running good.  Sometimes stuff it sucks in will clog the impeller area, and it may get noisy or not run properly.  Most of them, the impeller is attached by a magnet, so should pop out easily.  Clean it off-especially anything tangled around it, clean the housing area, go ahead and rinse out the whole thing(don't get the electrical box area wet though).  Also, check the intake tubes-those have a tendency to get clogged up with gunk as well.  Usually you need to use a brush that fits in them to clean them, but try running water through or maybe a paper towel.

If after giving it a good cleaning, it still doesn't want to work well, then it's probably time to buy a new one.  I'd go with a Marineland or Penguin brand, or an Aquaclear.  Keep the filter and stuff wet, and use it in the new filter or if that's not possible just squeeze it out onto the new filter media.  That should allow adequate bacteria on it.

  2. Before you but try stripping old filter as much as poss and wash well. Replace and see what happens
