Our little boy, Brewsky, just turned one so we decided its time to leash train him. Today we bought him a Marshall's nylon leash and harness. We put it on him so its snug but we can fit two fingers under it(we have small fingers so we fit two instead of one) and let him run around in it for 20 minutes. After we took him outside on the leash to walk around in the yard and on the street a little bit for a little over half an hour. It went surprisingly well. How often and for how long should we take him out for walks in the future?

  1. It really depends on your ferret. If he seemed to enjoy himself, then you can take him very often. If he seems nervous outside, then I would only take him a few times a month at the most until he is used to it. After a while, he will associate the harness with going outside (assuming that is the only time you put it on him) he will become excited when he sees the harness. When he acts like this, you can take him as much as you like because he will really like it. I work at Petco and there is a girl who comes in once a week with her ferret on his harness and leash and he loves it!! (she is very cautious though, because people also bring their dogs, so if you are going to take him to a pet store or somewhere where dogs are, be sure you pick him up whenever another animal is near, you wouldn't want anything to happen to your little guy. Also, keep in mind that the more you take him outside, the more likely it is for him to get ticks or fleas, so be sure you check him thoroughly when you bring him back inside.

  2. one thing about pets that all should remember. how often do you need exercise? how often do you need to eat. a ferret is used to being on the go all the time after all in the wild it has to chase down it's food supply (mice rats or other small things that it will eat in the wild) so it is used to moving all the time. so treat him the same way. let him move and run all the time it will sleep when it needs to and move when it wants then.

  3. I take my ferrets out every night for a walk in the yard. So it's not too tiring for them, and in the evening when it's cooler. They are sensitive to the heat.
