How often should I water a magnolia tree?

This tree is 25ft i dont no what kind of magnolis tree it is but my landlord said that i need to water it. so help me with my questions how much water and how often????

  1. a good soaking every couple of weeks should be fine, but it will probably be ok by itself anyway as the roots will be along way down


  2. we had a 50 foot magnolia and never had to water it at all...it is pretty self sufficient once established..if I did water it it would only be once monthly..

  3. depends on where you live and if it's been really, really dry.  normally, it should not need any extra watering since it's well established.  frankly, it sounds like your landlord may blame you if anything happens so I'd tell him to state exactly when to water, how often, and etc and follow his directions (even if dumb).  If anything goes wrong, you were only following his instructions.  

  4. If you haven't gotten a good soaking rain in a week or two, then let the hose run on it for half an hour or so to give the magnolia tree a good drink.

    Usually a 25 foot tree has a wide enough root system established to survive a couple weeks without rain.  It's the newly planted trees that need watering more frequently.
