i have had one for about 5 years and i water it about every8 to 10 days and its been fine>

Christmas catus and most other succulents prefer to be evenly moist  during active growth and quite dry during their dormancy.  The easiest way to kill them is to let their roots sit in water.

Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings, much as you would treat African violets.
