I seem to buy a new hunting bow every 2 to 1-1/2 years. Is this exsessive, i use my bow for Deer, Bear, Turky, rabbit, and woodchuck hunting, and i shoot constantly. I hardly use guns anymore unless i am goose hunting. I hunt every chance i can during the seasons and i spend 20 to 30 hours a week in the field. How offten do you guys think i should buy a new bow?

  1. Every 2 years is excessive. When I used to compete in target shoots, I was practicing 5 days a week, 160-170 shots per day as a maximum during the summer, and about 200 shots per week off season. Bows can take lots of shots. It takes about a year to really adjust to a new bow. Buy a really nice bow, and keep it for 4-10 years. Lots of the yearly upgrades "new and improved" or "fastest bow ever" stuff is just meaningless hype in real world situations. You will know when you have a winner in your hands, but it may take a few bows to get there. Keep the string waxed and don't beat it up too much and you will be just fine. Once you find a bow that really works for you, you will want to keep it forever, I have one that is 11 years old and I won't switch to anything else. Just have the bow looked at by a competent pro every year or so. The axles tend to wear out and or bend, timing/tiller/tuning can need adjusting, strings and cables need replacing after a few years ect. NEW does not mean better!!! You should learn to make your own arrows(if you don't already do so). Get an accurate scale, AZ E-Z fletch and learn the techniques. Bows do the same thing every time you shoot, arrows and the shooter need to try and do the same.

  2. You know, if money is not a problem, it really boils down to what makes you happy. Buy one every year if you wish to do so. I bought two in one month before. ( I wasn't pleased with the first one) Life is short- enjoy what you have.

  3. I have been using my Bear recurve bow for 20 years and intend to use it another 20

  4. any time is a good time for a new bow

  5. Hey, that's a personal choice, depending largely on your finances. If you can afford it, go for it. I've seen people use the same bow for decades, and it's done the trick. Of course new improved stuff comes out all the time and it's bound to help accuracy or noise or something, so if you can afford it go get happy. If not then I'd make some thoughtful choices about when the best time was to upgrade, and only do it when you get a great deal. You probably do wear out some bows a much as you shoot, or parts anyway.

Good equipment is extremely important to a craft though, so weight everything carefully. Only you can decide, and probably your wife might have something to say right? ; )
