Note: I have a old consumer unit with equally old circuit breakers in it, these must be 20 years old.

  1. A/C made some good points i also would like to add, give the box a good visual check, look for frayed wires etc.the breakers should be turned off & on once a year to make sure they mechanically work. since you just bought the house was there a inspection report about the electrical condition? if not have your local inspector look at it and advise you then you will have peace of mind.

  2. usually a circuit breaker is used up until it breaks. I am guessing you just bought a new home and have this old circuit breaker, i would replace them if you are just moving in, you may find a new circuit breaker will be more efficient.

  3. If you have to ask you need an electrician in order to not hurt or kill your-self and also to be sure any changes meet your local building codes.

  4. The only time to replace is if they get hot to the touch, make noise, or will not hold the load. Put the back of your hand on the breakers and you should not feel a lot of heat if a breaker is hot to the touch call someone right away it is a fire hazard. Put your ear near the panel box and you should not hear any noise from the breakers. If they pass these test they should be fine.
