  1. The more you work the horse the more buildup you will have. Clean it about once every 2 months, more if you are working alot though.

  2. I usually just rinse it with the hose every time I hose the horse, then when it seems to be dirty I'll clean it (like once every couple of moths). We have one pony who gets really dirty - he gets done every 4-6 weeks no matter what. Most of the others last a little longer.

  3. I aim to get my guys sheath cleaned about once a year, when he gets his shots, if your horse gets a lot of build-up you may want to do it every couple months...but be careful about how much you clean it, the body produces segma for a reason (I dunno what it is...but there HAS to be a reason for it!) and if you keep cleaning it away, the body will just produce mroe & more & more and make your horse get gunky quicker & quicker...

Good Luck..(Also some horses dont like it done...so try, but if yours doesnt, the vet will do it (mine charges like 25$ to do it...) and they can also sedate the horse so they wont be a dangere to you...

  4. I do this when I give them a bath or a hose off after working.

I tend to take the hose up inside and clean their sheaths by just sticking my hand up there and cleaning until the water runs clean.  I had one gelding who didn't like it being done at first, then was so happy to get it done (Guess it felt REALLY good!) that he'd drop to make it easier.

  5. Like Summer Solstice said, it really depends on the horse.  Some seem to get gunkier a lot quicker than others!   Keep an eye on it, and you should be able to gauge it after a few months.  The only exception, of course, is if you were getting ready to breed, in which case you'd clean his sheath directly beforehand.

  6. No more than 2 times a year, unless advised by your vet otherwise. Any more than that you will create more problems.

  7. once a year is good but some horses vary...

  8. Every six months is a general rule of thumb. Some horses need it more often, especially if they are in a dusty pasture.

  9. I'd say once a year (or twice a year, if he looks like hes getting crusty).

  10. Just clean it when it starts to look crusty. But don't clean it too much or not enough...can cause infections and such.

  11. Do NOT clean more than 2x's a year. Just as HorsePoop said. That is correct!!!!! It can & will create more problems!!! It is NOT healthy to clean more than that!!!! Here are links for you to learn the correct way to clean & when.
