How often should you replace lifejackets?

How often should you replace lifejackets for boating, swimming, etc.?

You should check your life vests regularly, depending on the brand i replace mine quite often, the auto inflate and the manual inflate jackets often just need a new re-fill pack which can be bough very cheaply, when the fabric starts to fade is when i check mine, most manufactures tell you when to replace the vests, if you're in any doubt don't use it and buy a new one, or test it, the older foam type usually last allot longer providing they have been stored correctly and dried after each use. Due to the type of fishing i do i don't use my life vests that often so I'm going to star this question in the hope that some one who does use them more often can help you out.

As soon as they start getting all flimsy and dont hold people up as well. we replace ours like.. every 8 months.. but we buy the pretty good kind so they dont usually wear out to fast. But we use them alot thats why we replacethem so often.

I do a lot of kayaking so I get a lot of use from my PFDs.  I use type three life vests with foam floatation.  When the fabric starts to noticeably fade is when I retire a life vest.  When nylon fades it also weakens and tears easily.  If it rips during an unscheduled swim it could lose some of the foam floatation and wouldn't be much use.  The best way to prolong the life of a PFD is to store it in a dry place out of the sun.  With proper storage a good life vest will last many years. I have never noticed the foam breaking down but would replace it immediately if I did.  The same goes for loss of floatation.  If you are in doubt ask a game warden or marine patrolman to check it for safety.  They will be happy to help you stay safe.
