The unit is in the backyard, and not in the shade, should I make a cover for it so that it is in the shade?

  1. DO NOT COVER!!  Tree shade is just fine, but nothing closer. The idea is to have a cool place to "dump" the heat from the condensing coil.

If the unit is well maintained, five years is a good figure, but if it ain't broke; don't fix it! Every time the unit is disturbed, you jeopardize the seals. If it is working as it should, leave it alone.

  2. You should never have to add refrigerant to it.  If you do, there is a leak that needs to be repaired before adding the stuff.  Your machine will do a little better with shade but do not restrict airflow through or around it in any way.  Make sure the coils are clean.

  3. Unless there is a leak, you never add freon to the unit. Do not cover the unit as it needs to exhaust the hot air out and away from it and also have access to new air.

  4. If the unit is filled and sealed properly, doesn't leak, you should never have to add freon.I have  a window unit 38 years old and has never had any service.since I added central air I use it in My garage. shade is better for the condenser so I have shrubs near it for shade but not too close as to interfere with it's operation.

  5. AM SORRY TO SAY , ADDING FREON TO SOMETHING IS ILLEGAL , YOU HAVE TO BUY A NEW UNIT .FREON IS A HIGHLY CONTROL CHEMICAL.
