Yes I enjoyed my Quantas flights but the thing is if a fault develops in one aircraft the same fault develops in others of the same type and age. I am old enough to remember the Comet disasters which occured before metal fatigue was properly understood

  1. The jury is still out on the cause.  My guess is that maintenance will be faulted, rather than the airframe.

It is true that as aircraft get older they require more maintenance, but it is also true that a properly maintained aircraft can fly safely for decades.  The military (in the U.S.) still flies B-52 bombers, which have been around so long that some of the current pilots are the grandchildren of the original pilots.  They are still as safe as they ever were. Twenty-five years is not old at all for an aircraft.

The Comet problems were due to a (significant) design defect, in the days when the effects of pressurization on airframes were still poorly understood.

A lot of airlines are outsourcing their aircraft maintenance to developing countries, and this concerns me a lot more than the age of aircraft.

  2. ,IT SEEMS QUANTA'S ARE GETTING A BAD PRESS, MAYBE DUE TO THE FACT OF THE MOST RESENT INCIDENT , BUT IT HAS THE MOST SAFEST AIR CRAFT IN THE WORLD , ITS RECORD SECOND TO NONE I BELIEVE, I HAVE DONE THAT TRIP, 23 TIMES USING BRIT AIRWAYS AMONGST OTHERS , BUT QUANTA'S ARE SUPERIOR !!!

  3. Qantas uses the 747-400 series. The 747's they're using are about 25 years old.  Qantas uses the 777 for long haul flights too but those are a lot newer.
