How old do hens have to be when they start laying eggs? Ours are about 3 months old.?

  1. It does depend on the breed and time of year.  I keep Golden Comets and Buff Orpingtons and they generally start laying at about 4 months, but don't really become regular layers until about 5 months.


  2. most breeds start laying around 5-6 months,but it might take a while to get a steady flow...

  3. G'day J R  from Australia. Our chooks usually started laying at around 26weeks old. Of course this would vary depending if iiiiits winter or summer. Your birds are about halfway there for the start of their egglaying carears.

    For better tasting eggs make sure you feed them all the old fruit and table vscrapes that your dog want eat. As well as letting them out to scatch in your yard for insects, grass , wild seeds and mineral rich dirt. (MAKE SURE SOMEone is watching them to protect them and your garden.
