How old do i have to be to buy car insurance

so i'm seventeen, do i have to wait until i'm eighteen or can i get it now on my own name without having to be on the same car insurance as my parents?

You can buy it once you're a legal driver.  Some companies won't sell it to you if you're under 18, however, because you're not a legal adult.  An insurance policy is a legal contract, and as a minor, you could say you didn't realize what you were buying and demand a refund.

You must be the owner of the vehicle to buy a policy.  If the car is in your parents' name, they will have to insure it and add you as a driver on their policy.  The latter is generally the cheapest.

You should discuss it with your insurance agent.  There may be discounts for family policies - if you stay on your parents' plan until you turn 18.  Some companies also have "good student" discounts while you are still in school.  Both of my parents are insurance agents.  It would likely be 18, as you would have to be old enough to enter into a legally binding contract without a co-signer.

I'm pretty sure you can get it in your name if you have a valid driver's license and the car is titled in your name.  This does not mean that your parents wouldn't be still legally responsible for damages caused by you, however.  Call some insurance companies and ask the question.

You can just ask your parents to buy you your own separate car insurance.  You have to be 18, or 21 in some states, to legally buy your own car insurance.  The thing is, since you're in the same household, I think it'd just be a lot cheaper to add another driver on your current insurance.  It's going to cost a lot of money to have two separate car insurances.
