  1. A mother or father (or legal guardian) can register a gun to a child at birth.  So technically you can be 1 minute old to own a firearm (source: BATFE website).

    Otherwise, a close relative can register a rifle or a shotgun to a kid as early as 8-10 (varies by state).

    To BUY a firearm YOURSELF from a store/dealer you have to be 18 yrs old for rifles/shotguns (includes M4, AK, etc) and 21 for any pistol, Class III weapon or accessory, and AOW (that's Any Other Weapon - sawed of shotguns, etc.).  

    Private resale of ANY weapon can be conducted at 18 yrs of age.

    Research www.atf.gov and call your local Sheriff's office for a site with state regulations for more information.


  2. In the USA you have to be 18 to purchase long guns and 21 to purchase handguns (or weapons handled by Class III dealers).  You can be gifted a gun at any age by a responsible party.

    I don't know about gun licenses in Canada.
