It depends on the law where you live.

In most of the US, for example, the law requires you to be 21 to legally purchase or be served or given alcohol to drink.  Other countries (and some local laws in certain areas in the US) have different ages.

So far everyone is wrong about the US being 21.

Simple fact of the matter: 21 is the legal purchase and possession age.  

In most states, there either is no specific drinking age or there are laws which allow persons under 21 to drink alcohol, whether it is Beer, Wine, or Spirits, in certain places and times.

Just select your state and it will give you all the alcohol laws for you.  Notice that if you choose Massachusetts, where I am, that for Underage Consumption it says, "Consumption is not explicitly prohibited."  This implies that the act of consumption itself is not legal.  However, you would still need to be 21 to purchase any alcohol, and you are very rarely allowed to drink in a restaurant/bar underage (believe it or not, there are states which allow a parent to buy a drink for their underage child in a restaurant or bar).  And underage persons are always prohibited from transporting alcohol, in effect it means let someone over 21 when there's alcohol in the car.
