How old do you have to be to cross the Canadian/American border in a car?

My friend and I are both 16 and she has her full license (I have my permit). I was wondering if it would be legal for us to cross the border (with parental consent) to spend the day shopping. Or do we need an 18 year-old with us? (We'd be crossing from Quebec to Vermont). Thanks!

  1. I would check with the Canadian Border Security People, if you have a valid or the driver has a valid licence and it is a day trip it should not be a problem, I have friend who have take 3-7 day old infant over at Niagara Falls ON for the day to Buffalo NY, for family visit and just a picnic.

There is no minimum age, now if your staying the night, you might have a problem, as most hotels/motels will not rent to anyone under 18 without a valid credit card for damages, but a shopping trip for the day, I say do not worry, there going to ask you some basic questions like were your from, the purpose of your trip, how long are you staying, the customs issue with the duty on products is the authority of the Canadian Customs people.
