  1. Anyone born after 1976 needs a boating safety course to operate a motorized vessel in NY. You can take the course from the US Sail and Power Squadron in your area.

  2. In order to operate a boat in NYS without adult supervision individuals must be at least 18 yrs of age or have succesfully completed a safe boating course and be between the ages of 10 and 18. Individuals that have not completed a boating safety course may only operate a vessel while under the direct supervision of an individual who is 18 years of age or older. The required boating safety certificate must be carried by the minor at all times while operating the boat.

To operate a PWC in NYS everybody must now have a boating safety certificate unless they are US or Canadian licensed commercial vessel operators, state, USCG or USPS instructors or police, fire or rescue personnel acting in their assigned duties.
