How old do you have to be to go skiing without your parents?

I am 16 and I have been talking with my friends about going skiing either the end of this season or 08/09 season. My Dad seems to think that you need to be 18 to buy the insurance, does anyone know if this is true?

Your father is correct, but don't fret, you can still make it work!  The insurance your father is speaking about (I am making an assumption) is the kind that is used to replace skiis or snowboards, should they break.

Is that correct?

If so, you can rent your skiis and boots and poles at many sporting good stores.  I live in Southern California, we have Big 5 and sport chalet and CBS board shops.  All of these locations rent skii equipment.  You can use the internet or a phone book to find a local sports store and see if they rent.  Take your father with you and have him sign the forms and waiver of liability.  Make sure to do this as CLOSE to your planned skii day as possible, as you're charged a rental fee for every day you have the items out.

As for the actual skiing, you do not technically need a parent with you.  You may purchase your own lift tickets and skii on the slopes.  There is no insurance that a mountain will offer you in terms of injury, etc, so I'm fairly certain your father was speaking about equipment insurance.

I would still recommend someone over the age of 18 going though, it's just safer that way!

P.S. I would HIGHLY recommend that you bring a piece of paper and put it in an easily accesible pocket on your skii jacket.  Have the following information written on it.

1. Your full name

2. An emergency name and number (For instance, your parents names and their cell and home phone numbers)

3. The health insurance company that covers you (This is probably through your mom or your dad)

4. The "group #, or policy # etc" on the insurance card

5. The 1-800 customer service number on the insurance card.

6. The names and cell phone numbers of people on the mountain with you.

That way if anything bad DOES happen to you, you'll be ok =)

What insurance? I think 16 is old enough but it may depend on the mountain. The mountain close to us is a small one and I see a lot of teenagers skiing there without their parents possibly. It depends on your maturity level and ability to follow the rules. Of course there are plenty of adults that either don't know the rules or choose not to follow them. Are you in the U.S.?

I think you can take someone out skiing as soon as they're old enough to strap on a pair of skis.
