  1. If you have taken an approved hunter safety course and will be carrying a firearm in the field, you will need a Firearms owners Id card. It's not a permit to carry a gun in Illinois. It is used when buying ammo or guns and the information is recorded and stored at the store and with the Illinois State Police. ( for guns, not ammo)

The only concealed carry firearm permits available in Illinois are for licenses private detectives. However, to get that license you have to have been a police officer for at least 5 years and pass all tests and background checks. there are very few of those permits. Retired Police officers, corrections officers and military officers can get a concealed carry permit if they pass all the little hoops you have to jump through. You have to qualify annually and pay $75.00 for one type of firearm. ( revolver vs semi auto) or $100.00 for both and you have to qualify with both.

Illinois is one of the toughest states on firearms. Since the Supreme court ruled against Chicago and other city gun bans, they are crying like babies. Their annual gun buy produces what sounds like huge turn-ins but almost all of the guns are junk and so bad that they barely qualify as firearms. Many are missing parts and do not fire and are beyond repair.

I have heard of folks taking anything they could find that was junk there and getting 100 bucks apiece. It is all legal too. Some people have gotten about a thousand bucks for guns that would get them 50 bucks for parts.

  2. Can't swear to it since I moved away about 6 years ago  but it used to be 19 for rifle and shotgun and 21 for handgun. The Illinois State Police handle the FOID cards and they have a web site. You should be able to google up the Illinois State Police.

  3. There has been some news on this for a few months now. It used to be that as soon as someone was born the parent could get a Firearm Owner Identification Card (FOID)...I know my pastor got his son one at the age of 4...He cannot buy one yet on his own but he has a FOID card.

You can buy a shotgun or rifle with FOID card at the age of 18 and a handgun at the age of 21.
