How old do you have to be to legally adopt a child?

I know that you may feel like you want a child right now, but there are many things that you are not considering.  You need to finish school first, get married and be able to provide a stable life for this child.  Also, children need an incredible amount of love, not that you are not capable, but you still need to be receiving this love.  You are still a child!

Have you ever thought of getting involved in volunteering, or a non profit organization like Big Brother/ Sister of America.  This will enable you to be very close to a needy child while still allowing you to be a child yourself.  I wanted a child very badly, but there is a time and a place for everything.  

Also, can you afford about $50,000 or more just to adopt the child?  That does not include the large amount of money it takes to raise one.

It depends what country...but it is ALWAYS 18 or older. Legally, you may be old enough, but you always need to make sure you are also emotionally and finacially ready before you bring a child into your life. Feel free to email me:

you've got to be kidding me....you need to be in a stable marriage, and probably at least 25.

at 16, you are a child.  they aren't going to give you another child to raise.  and don't go get yourself pregnant.  you can't give it back.

I think you MUST be 18..but u shud b married and in a nice home, ready for a child first

I think you must be around 18 above. You also must have your own job, own house, own stable income and adjust in behavior. You are eligible to adopt a child as long as meet these requirements above stated. I had several Aunts and Uncles who adopted a child, they can adopt a child if you are eligible for the requirements.

it depends on the agency but a lot of places want you to be about 25.  I think you can foster a little younger than that though.  But 16, um NO!
