I lived alone from age 16. It was hard though, I wouldn't recommend it unless you already have a decent job and a place to stay.

its 16, but you can't buy much stuff or sign much contracts until you're 18

You can live alone from the age of 16 legally, although you will be unable to get utilities or anything else supplied, because a contract is not legally enforceable upon a minor (ie: until you're 18).
