The best thing to do is ask the local zoo and animal shelters directly. Each area will differ on a minimum age requirement.

In addition to these places you might want to check any local wildlife nature centers, parks located in natural habitats, and even find out if there are any local wildlife rehabilitators who could use help. Google the international wildlife rehabilitators to find someone local in your area.

With local shelters you might offer to walk animals around the premises for exercise and just give some individual attention to them. I've seen kids do this and it seems really neat!
