To work in a restaurant that sells alcohol as a server you have to be able to get a liquor license 18. As a host some restaurants will let you be the minimum working age.

if you want to work at a restaurant you only have to be 16.  if you want to be a waiter or waitress you have to be 18.  you cant serve alcohol unless you are a legal adult.  someone answered that you have to be 21, but that isnt true.  i started waiting tables when i was 18.

It depends on the state that you live in. That state's Department of Labor sets the standard. For the most part the minimum age is 16 years old and there any many rules designed to ease minors in. There are some states in the south that allow 15 year olds to work but under extremely limited hours.

The laws regarding minors usually include a mandatory break after a set number of hours (usually 4) and a maximum number of hours per day (6) on school nights as well as maximum number of weekly hours (30) during school session.

For the most part 16 and 17 year olds work in the Front of House (FOH) while Back of House workers need to be over 18 to work on kitchen equipment (that is a Federal Law).
