  1. In some states it is 18, but in most states and in the Federal Government it is 21 to actually begin working.  If you go to a Community College and get a degree in Criminal Justice with a Corrections Emphasis, it's all academic an no academy and that would take you at least 2 years.  So you would be close to 21 if starting at 18 out of high school.  At that point, you could get hired in the prison system.  FOR US (Federal Bureau of Prisons).  We will only hire a correctional officer trainee that has some college or Criminal Justice / Social Science Background.  The benefits are great, the job is rewarding, and that pay is pretty good.  Getting a basic College Education in Criminal Justice would definately make you a better Officer.

  2. Hello Dassi. I can only answer for Ohio, where I am, but you need to have a High School diploma ( or GED), be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license with no more than 6 points on it at time of application. ( You will drive state vehicles for the job and loss of your license is grounds for dismissal while working).

After that, it is 7 weeks at the Corrections Training Academy and 1 year on probation at your facility.

Best of luck and welcome to our little club
