  1. Some states and departments allow you to become a police officer at age 18. However, you must often be age 21. Check out http://www.peaceofficerjobs.com for information and advice about becoming a police officer.

  2. At least 21 years old...

  3. Well it's to the department.

But most depts have it like this:

    Police departments: 21

    Sheriff Departments: 19

    Pros:

Police departments: You get to see way more action than the sheriff (depending where you live) and your back up is closer.

Sheriff departments: You can join at a younger age, Sheriff depts useally have more division (ie: boat rescue, bomb squad, Narcotics enforcement, Jails, Court duties, SWAT, K9, Equestrian, etc.) so you have a wide verity to chose from.  You get a larger beat zone to patrol, and other stuff. :)

    Cons:

Police departments: 21 Hiring age, you cover a small beat (depending on city), you go to ALOT of domestic violence calls (again depending on city), and do alot of paper work.

Sheriff departments: You don't see alot of action (depending on area), you cover a HUGE beat zone, your back up is sometimes aways out (depending), etc.
